What is a superfood? What makes them super and why are they super for me?

September 16 2016

A superfood is a food that's considered to be particularly good for your health or wellbeing. They're quite faddy though; people tend to jump onto them because they claim to be good for one thing in particular - like shiny hair, or soft skin. The reality is that your body will use the nutrients from these foods for whatever they need the most! So if you're eating something to give you shiny hair, but your adrenal glands need those nutrients more, your adrenal glands may take them!

What is our “thing” with food?

September 16 2016
It's simple really: amazing comforting food that helps to keep your body feeling great. We're one of the first to do things this way, because we've got reams of experience in the kitchen and in nutritional therapy. If it doesn't taste wonderful, and make you feel wonderful too, we won't make it! Having said that, we are all different, so if you're eating something that doesn't appear to agree with you, please come and have a chat with us...

What's the harm in having pizza once in a while?

September 16 2016
There's no harm! Our way isn't about starving yourself of the things you love, or introducing restrictive rules. It's about understanding the food you eat, and taking things in moderation. We like a pizza from time to time too ;) .

If I do all you suggest, how on earth will I enjoy my life?

September 16 2016

We hope that if you do all we suggest, you'll enjoy your life more! We've been eating this way for ages, and we'll never look back.

That said, if you've been stuck in a food rut for a while, and you cut everything out instantly, you'll probably feel a bit rubbish as you'll shock your body. Take things one step at a time, and in your own time. We can also help you to figure out exactly the kind of direction you need if you meet us in person!

Is there a way to calm my cravings?

September 16 2016
Yes! So...every time you have a craving, say for sweet, salty or fatty food, it could be for many reasons; it may even be because of a specific nutrient deficiency. We'll write about this in a blog post soon, but come and meet us in our café if you want to find out straight away!

What fat should I be using to fry / cook / bake with?

September 16 2016
We like to sauté with fats and oils with a high smoke point. That's because when you hear your fat sizzle, and see it smoking, it may be shifting its structure into a trans-fat structure. Trans-fats are rubbish for you! We like coconut oil in particular, as it has a high smoke point and won't change it's structure.

What's wrong with sugar?

September 16 2016
This is a big question! And the answer is: there's lots wrong with it. Apart from the fructose aspect, the main issue is that we don't always know when we're eating it. Like, when a product says "Sugar-Free", don't always believe it! It may not be sugary in those words, but it may contain chemical sugars which can cause some serious damage to your body over time. We'll cover this one in more detail over in our blog over the coming weeks and months.

Why should I give up dairy?

September 16 2016
Firstly, it's not always about giving things up. Just cutting down on this stuff is going to pay off in the long-run. But, did you know that almost everyone on the planet can be intolerant to cow's dairy? The proteins in milk (casein) or the milk sugars (lactose and the sci-fi sounding galactose) together with the size of the fat molecules, don't tend to sit so well with our digestive systems most of the time. This can lead to some horrible side-effects in the short-term, and more serious digestive complications in the long-term.

Isn't this just another diet?

September 16 2016

Nope. The thing is with fad diets is that they're usually based on partial knowledge, a little bit of hearsay and a lot of marketing hype. They also don't consider your body as a whole or as an individual.

The Aprés perspective is based on a holistic approach to the body, and is grounded in years of research and evidenced-based scientific study. It's certainly not about strict adherence to a set of rules. The best part is, we're also chefs - so if it doesn't taste phenomenal, it won't make the cut.

Is all fat bad for me?

September 16 2016
Saturated fats and trans-fats aren't good for you, as they increase cholesterol levels, which can lead to various complications. Good fats like some unsaturated fats and Omega-3 fatty acids can contribute to good blood sugar, and decrease your risk of heart disease. All things in moderation though!
